Our Company

Alta Biomed (formerly Alta Biomaterials) is a medical device coating and testing company focused on PzF thin-film surface technologies for vascular and other blood-contacting medical devices.

Based in Carlsbad, California, Alta Biomed works with medical device developers to evaluate PzF coating feasibility, develop coating processes, assess coating integrity, support acute particulate testing, and compare coated and uncoated devices using dynamic human blood loop testing.

Our mission is to help medical device companies improve the blood-contacting interface of their devices through practical coating development, technically grounded testing, and device-specific collaboration.

Our Focus

Alta Biomed specializes in PzF coating technology and related testing services for blood-contacting medical devices. Our work supports companies developing vascular, catheter-based, implantable, and other devices where surface chemistry, coating integrity, particulate risk, and hemocompatibility are important development considerations.

Alta’s core areas of focus include:

  • PzF thin-film coating services

  • Antithrombotic coating feasibility and development

  • Vascular and blood-contacting device applications

  • Coating integrity inspection

  • Acute particulate testing

  • Human blood loop testing

  • ISO 10993-4-aligned hemocompatibility testing support

  • Coated vs. uncoated device comparisons

  • Coating process development and technical transfer

PzF Surface Technology

Alta Biomed’s proprietary PzF coating technology is a thin-film polymer surface modification designed for medical device applications. PzF can be evaluated on a range of blood-contacting devices and materials, including stents, grafts, catheters, filters, nitinol devices, ePTFE devices, PET/polyester materials, and other implantable or vascular device components.

Because each device is different, Alta approaches coating development as a device-specific process. Material compatibility, surface preparation, geometry, coating access, drying behavior, simulated use, inspection methods, and hemocompatibility testing are all considered during development.

Company History

Alta Biomed builds on a history of medical device coating development, commercialization, and PzF-related technology experience.

Formerly known as Alta Biomaterials, Alta Biomed continues to advance PzF coating applications for medical device companies developing blood-contacting and implantable technologies.

Alta’s technology background includes experience with PzF-coated device platforms and prior CeloNova BioSciences product lines. In 2015, Boston Scientific announced the acquisition of CeloNova BioSciences’ interventional radiology portfolio, including embolic microsphere technologies developed and manufactured by CeloNova. Today, Alta Biomed is focused on partnering with medical device companies to evaluate and develop PzF coating applications for new vascular, catheter-based, and blood-contacting device programs.

How We Work With Medical Device Companies

Alta Biomed works with customers through collaborative, device-specific development programs. Depending on the customer’s needs, a program may begin with early feasibility testing and progress toward coating process optimization, coated vs. uncoated performance comparisons, simulated use evaluation, particulate testing, hemocompatibility testing, and manufacturing implementation.

Typical collaboration areas include:

  • Early device and material review

  • Coating feasibility testing

  • Surface preparation and adhesion strategy development

  • PzF coating process development

  • Coating integrity and particulate evaluation

  • Human blood loop testing

  • Development-stage technical reports

  • Process scale-up and technical transfer support

Alta’s goal is to help customers make informed development decisions using practical, device-relevant data.

Quality Commitment

Alta Biomed is committed to continuously improving its services, systems, and technical processes to support customers developing medical device surface technologies.

We apply our knowledge of PzF coating applications, surface modification, coating development, and blood-contacting device testing while maintaining the effectiveness of our Quality Management System and complying with applicable requirements.

Our quality commitment supports the development of controlled, documented, and reproducible coating and testing processes for customer programs.

Based in Carlsbad, California

Alta Biomed operates from Carlsbad, California, a major medical device and life science hub in Southern California.

Our facility supports coating development, device processing, testing, and cleanroom manufacturing activities for medical device customers. Alta’s location allows us to work closely with device developers, suppliers, testing partners, and medical technology companies throughout Southern California and beyond.
